Leverkusen Crushes West Ham, Secures Halfinal Berth

Levy Hopes to Break 'Curse of the Semifinals'

Bayer Leverkusen has secured its spot in the UEFA Europa League semifinals after a thrilling 1-0 victory over West Ham United. The German club rode on a solitary goal from Moussa Diaby to seal the deal and ensure a place among the final four teams in the competition.

This triumph represents a significant milestone for Leverkusen, as it marks the club's first appearance in a European semifinal since 2008. Manager Xabi Alonso hailed his team's resilience and determination, expressing his pride in their accomplishment.

"We knew it would be a tough game, but the boys showed their character and quality tonight," said Alonso. "We controlled the game from the start, and I'm delighted that we were able to take our chances."

The victory also carries historical significance for Bayer Leverkusen. It is the first time the club has progressed past the quarterfinal stage of the Europa League since its rebranding in 2009.

However, Alonso remains cautious, acknowledging that the toughest challenges lie ahead. "We're not getting carried away," he said. "There are three more matches to go, and we need to stay focused on our goal."

Leverkusen will now face either Barcelona or Manchester United in the semifinals, with the first leg set to be played in Germany on Thursday, April 27. The club will be hoping to break its recent curse in European competitions, having lost in the semifinals of both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League in recent years.
